23 Apr Journey to the Roots of FM: A Hands-on Guided Tour of Historic ERT Corfu
Coordinator: Renata Dalianoudi
Maximum Participants: 30
Duration: 30′
Booking Required
Within the framework of the School Radio Festival, we invite students to a unique tour of the heart of information and culture in the Ionian Islands. ERT Corfu opens its doors to welcome the next generation of radio producers in an activity that bridges a glorious past with a creative future.
ERT Corfu (formerly ERA Corfu) is more than just a station; it is a living museum of Greek broadcasting.
-
Commencement of Operations: The station first aired on March 28, 1957, with the iconic voice of Corfiot Giorgos Karter introducing: “This is Corfu. The Radio Station of Northwestern Greece.”
-
The Building: Construction began in 1953, and it remains one of the area’s architectural landmarks, having hosted prominent figures from the fields of politics and the arts.
Highlights of the Tour
Students will have the rare opportunity to see up close:
-
The Historic Medium Wave Transmitter: A machine with a legendary history. It was originally located on a U.S. Navy warship during World War II, was later used by the “Voice of America,” and was finally installed in Corfu in 1955 to serve the needs of the national network.
-
Vintage Studios: The radio booths established in the early 1960s, which still preserve the aura of the “Golden Age” of radio.
The Educational Program
Under the guidance of Dr. Renata Dalianoudi (Associate Professor of Musicology & Ethnomusicology at the Ionian University and ERT producer), students will be guided in groups of 30. The tour includes:
-
Presentation of archival material and vintage production machinery.
-
